Okay so we talked about all the preliminaries and those kind of things and it was very boring.

We were talking about grades and so on last week.

So let's go to get to the more interesting things.

I was trying to show you a little bit about my claim that AI is here today and today I'm

to start off a little bit with trying to give you ways of thinking about AI.

We have seen all kinds of pictures of what AI can do today.

This is also not cooperating.

I was going to say this must be a Monday but it doesn't.

Okay so the fact of, or one of the things, and I briefly mentioned this but I want to

put it up in a slide as well, is that AI is a subfield of computer science or at least

that's what the computer scientists claim.

Some mathematicians say oh machine learning is only linear algebra and linear algebra

is part of math so AI is part of math.

I think they're wrong.

One of the reasons is because AI is much bigger than machine learning and machine learning

is much bigger as we'll see in the second semester than just linear algebra.

Even though yes certain parts of classifications are best viewed with techniques from linear

algebra.

So also AI is really something about trying to understand intelligence by building it

and then seeing whether what we built behaves anything like the intelligence we know from

humans.

And that's a difficult problem.

So difficult in fact that many of the techniques computer scientists have developed for these

much too hard questions have been innovations that kind of found their way into computer

science.

So many of the computer science techniques we're seeing today have actually been incubated

in AI.

Functional programming is one of them.

You may have heard of Lisp being the kind of original programming language of AI which

has gone or at least the ideas of this gone a lot into modern programming languages.

Logic programming we're going to use Prolog is another attempt to have a high level programming

language that tries to solve certain problems of making certain programs be writeable and

debuggable and those kind of things.
